Our History

Friends of the Animal Center Foundation (FACF) was established in 1999 to support the Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center, a department of the City of Iowa City. While the Animal Care & Adoption Center is publicly funded, city budgets are designed to cover essential operations and basic care. FACF was created to enhance those resources — helping provide programs, treatment, and support beyond what public funding alone can offer.

By raising private support, the Foundation bridges the gap between basic care and exceptional care. Donations help fund medical treatment, behavior support, enrichment, volunteer programs, and community initiatives that improve quality of life and increase lifesaving outcomes for animals.

Growing With Our Community

As the needs of the Animal Care & Adoption Center have grown, FACF has grown alongside it. Many animals arrive requiring specialized medical care, training, or longer stays to become adoptable. FACF works in partnership with shelter staff to provide the additional resources needed to give each animal the time, space, and support they deserve.

Looking Ahead

Today, Friends of the Animal Center Foundation remains committed to enhancing the care provided at the Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center through private support and community engagement. With the help of donors and volunteers, FACF continues to strengthen programs that save lives, support humane care, and build a better future for animals in our community.
